The Marine Mammal Center is one of my favorite spots to frequent in the Bay Area. It is the only organization authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to rescue and provide veterinary care for all ill and injured marine mammals along 600 miles of California coast. In 2009, they saw an all time high of patients so that means when something in the ocean makes them sick, we, too, are at risk. The Marine Mammal Center has rescued thousands of these sentinels of the sea and continues to identify the causes of marine mammal illness and how that affects the health of the ocean.
