Personally I think the San Francisco ban doesn't go far enough. There are still so many places allowed to use bags, including the Mexican grocers, Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, and so on, always littering the streets and being inappropriately placed in recycling bins. They are recyclable, but NOT as part of curbside recycling pickup!

How could anyone think that adding a chemical to another chemical would make both of them simply "disappear?"

Good point about oil-soaked garbage. I suspect a lot of the oil could be reclaimed from the hair, but it might require inventing some technology for that. Which probably wouldn't be that difficult, would just take some time and effort.

Dear Fluffy,

At the moment, they're stockpiling the booms but there is also discussion of
having BP incinerate (bad idea) or potential for mushrooms . Currently, Matter of Trust is talking to the government in Louisiana. Planet Check just booked
an interview with Lisa Gautier, the founder of Matter of Trust to find out more and get a more accurate idea of what is going on in the Gulf. As of today, we do know that the actual amount of oil is much more than originally reported. Gautier told me thus far "At least 66 million gallons." For anyone who wants to donate hair, they need to sign up by May 20th. I will know much more after the interview this Monday @ noon.

Yeah, there's a lot of things that will soak up oil via capillary action (there's a widely-circulated video of hay for the same idea). The problem is that now you have a bunch of oil-soaked garbage - what do you do with THAT?

Also, there's the issue of getting enough of it onto what's actually a VERY large oil spill, and then getting that out of the ocean without causing more damage than you were trying to avoid to begin with.

That, is a bummer.

I'd love to know what the business case for this was. I'm sure it seemed like the right idea at the time.

My guess is that this won't be shown to be the result of a single failure. It's most likely the result of a chain of small failures and some plain old bad luck.

The more complicated the system, the harder it is to anticipate failure. Having worked around platforms in a previous life, these are definitely complicated systems!
